ChimpKey was built by listening.

In the early 2000s, our journey began with a system called VINS. VINS was designed to speed up the paperwork associated with vehicle import and export from Canada and the US.  VINS was well received and quickly connected us with customs brokers who were managing the clearance of those vehicles. VINS was heavily relied on by both brokers and Registered Importer companies. That’s where we saw something bigger.

Every shipment came with documents. Every document required data entry. And every entry a lot of time, noticeable costs and carried substantial risks.

At first, we looked at the problem and thought it was too complex to solve, with the variety of documents, formats, and requirements made it seem out of reach. But our customers kept talking about it and asking for a better way to solve this deep rooted problem within their industry. So we kept listening.

We started small. Working closely with a customs broker, we focused on automating proforma invoices. It wasn’t perfect at first, but it worked. Then we expanded. More documents. More complexity. More success. We had something, and something really valuable for the customer that wasn’t just an insignificant little add on tool.

That was the turning point.

We realized this wasn’t just a customs brokerage problem. It existed in every industry. Businesses everywhere were receiving critical data through emailed PDFs like invoices, purchase orders, and confirmations, then frantically manually entering that data into their systems creating errors, costs, time delays and stress within the company.

So we kept doing what got us there. We listened.

Industry by industry, customer by customer, we learned how each business worked, what they needed, and where the real friction truly was. And instead of forcing a one size solution, calling it done and hoping for the best result, we built software that actually adapts to each customer’s process.
